Hymid Multi-Shot Ltd (Hymid) are a successful technical plastic injection moulding services company based here in Torbay, providing new product development and ongoing manufacturing supply partnerships to blue chip customers in medical/healthcare, instrumentation, consumer and electronics sectors. Whilst our core business of providing high-quality subcontract plastic injection moulding services has served them well, we recognized the need to diversify and strengthen our position in the marketplace. This led us to develop our own product – a novel, robust plastic hard case suitable for storing high value tools and devices.

However, whilst confident in our manufacturing capabilities, Hymid had never designed, tested or launched their own product before, so recognised we needed a helping hand. The advice, help and financial support delivered by Studio Zao via the IMPACT Torbay grant program proved invaluable.
Developing our own product has been a game-changer for Hymid. It has allowed us to explore new avenues and further develop our in-house expertise with the hard case project serving as a catalyst for identifying key areas where strategic investment would make a significant difference. Hymid knew we needed to protect our intellectual property, improve our production efficiency and embrace sustainable practices. The IMPACT Torbay grant program helped to deliver solutions to these challenges, accelerating innovation and growth.

Grant Application 1: Protecting Innovation and Embracing Sustainable Practices
This application focused on two key areas: overseas design registration and investment in energy-efficient technology. Hymid recognized the potential for international sales of the hard case, so securing design registration in the EU was paramount to protecting the innovation from copycats. Simultaneously, Hymid were committed to reducing our environmental footprint. Hymid therefore applied for funding to invest in the latest compressed air drier technology, which not only improved the efficiency of the raw material drying process but also significantly reduced energy consumption, aligning with our Net Zero goals.
Grant Application 2: Accelerating Growth Enhancing Production Capabilities
The second grant application focused on exploiting the initial success of the first grant by extending the design registration to the USA to enable more export led sales, and enhancing our production capabilities by investing in a new digital chiller. This upgrade was essential to maximizing the production efficiency of the hard case and other projects, ensuring we could meet anticipated demand and maintain their high-quality standards.
A Resounding Success:
Hymid are delighted to report that both grant applications were successful! We secured over £16,000 in funding, which had a transformative impact on the business Thanks to the IMPACT Torbay grants, we have been able to:
Secure our intellectual property: Hymid have successfully registered our hard case design in the EU and USA, opening up exciting opportunities for international expansion.
Invest in sustainable technology: Our new compressed air dryers are significantly more energy-efficient, reducing our carbon footprint and contributing to a greener manufacturing process.
Enhance their production capabilities: The new digital chiller has significantly improved our production efficiency, allowing us to meet growing demand whilst maintaining the highest quality standards.
Create new opportunities: The hard case project, fuelled by the grant funding and subsequent knowledge gain, has opened doors to new markets and created new opportunities for growth and innovation within Hymid.

The IMPACT Torbay grant program has been instrumental in helping Hymid take the next step in its evolution. It has enabled us to invest in our collective future, embrace sustainable practices, and solidify our position as a leading provider of plastic injection moulding services and to be a successful local employer.
We are incredibly grateful for the support and look forward to continued growth and innovation in the years to come. Hymid would encourage other local businesses to explore the opportunities offered through Torbay Council’s growth initiatives – they can truly make a difference.
