Hymid were selected as a Finalist of the Plastics Industry Awards 2012, along with long-time partners ETI (Electronic Temperature Instruments) for the enormously successful Thermapen in the Consumer Product Design category. The super-fast Thermapen is the World’s No1 bestselling digital thermometer, has taken the United States barbeque competition market by storm, and is available in 13 colours. It remains British-made, using British manufacturing and mainly British components. Designed some thirty years ago, ETI approached Hymid to solve problems with their original design. A glued-in window and a less-than-watertight seal meant water/dust ingress and dirt traps proved problematic for a food contact item meant for commercial kitchens. Hymid applied its two-shot design expertise to refine the Thermapen – now a sleek, ergonomic, watertight, smooth and attractive unit with a moulded-in window and two-shot seal. Moulded in PC/ABS with a Biomaster additive, it has been featured on Masterchef and Saturday Kitchen and is recommended by celebrity chefs Rick Stein and Heston Blumenthal. While we didn't win, congratulations to Trunki, though one does wonder how Eyejusters didn't scoop the gold for Consumer Product Design.
